Andy Murray withdraws from the 2022 French Open

According to Reuters Media on Sunday, Andy Murray of Glasgow, Scotland, has pulled out of the 2022 French Open. In fact, he has decided to withdraw from the entire clay court season, which means he will also miss the Monte Carlo Masters, the Barcelona Open, the Madrid Open, and the Italian Open.
Murray’s decision should not come as a huge surprise. His focus is obviously Wimbledon, where he is a two-time champion having won in 2013 and 2016.
It was the 2016 tennis season where Murray had a magnificent year. In addition to winning the Wimbledon title over Milos Raonic of Canada, Murray won his second consecutive gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where he defeated Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina. He also reached the Australian Open final, where he was beaten by Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

But what might have been lost from his 2016 season is the fact that Murray also reached the French Open final where he lost to Djokovic, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. Murray has put up some outstanding results on clay over the years. They include winning the 2015 Bavarian Championships in Munich by a score of 7-6, 5-7, 7-6 in the final over German Philipp Kohlschreiber, the 2015 Madrid Open by upsetting Nadal in the final, 6-3, 6-2, and the 2016 Italian Open, where he beat Djokovic, 6-3, 6-3.
Murray has seen his world ranking drop to 95, but there are some positive signs in his game. Already in 2021, Murray has reached an ATP Final. Prior to the Australian Open, Murray reached his first ATP final since 2019 when he lost to Aslan Karatsev of Russia, 6-3, 6-3 at the Sydney International. Karatsev has had some remarkable results in Australia over the last two years.
