When Andy Murray made the announcement of his intention to retire after the 2024 Olympic Games, many wondered what the three-time grand slam finalist and former world number one would do next. Over the weekend, we found out the answer. Murray will be coaching one of his greatest rivals, and current world number seven Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

For now the partnership is leading up to and including the 2025 Australian Open in Melbourne. The fact that Murray is jumping right back into tennis after retiring in the summer may be surprising to many. It is very interesting to see that Murray is coaching a player who he played 36 times in his career, and lost four Australian Open finals to.

Murray and Djokovic are also extremely close in age. They are both 37, with Murray being born on May 15, 1987, and Djokovic being born on May 22, 1987.

Djokovic was frustrated with his 2024 tennis season. He withdrew from the ATP Finals in Turin, but was still able to achieve one of his lifetime goals in 2024. That was winning the Olympic gold medal.

This is not the first time a former player has coached Djokovic. The list includes Andre Agassi, Boris Becker, Radek Stepanek, Goran Ivanisevic, Todd Martin, and Australia’s own Mark Woodforde.

One may wonder if Djokovic needs a tennis coach at all. He is a 24-time grand slam singles champion and has won a record 10 Australian Opens. It will now be interesting to see how active Murray becomes as a coach. Will he be laid back and give Djokovic advice when he asks for it? Or will he be very active and not afraid to express his opinion when necessary.
