According to Chris Marzella of Daily Record on Tuesday, British tennis star Andy Murray has won the 2022 Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award. The award is presented annually to the tennis player who makes a significant contribution to humanitarianism.

Murray was honoured for donating $630,000 to UNICEF’s humanitarian response due to the war in Ukraine. The funds will be used to help keep children in Ukraine safe and helping ensure the children get the necessary water and food. Ukraine was invaded by Russia shortly after the conclusion of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.

This is the second time Murray has won the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award. The first time was in 2014 when he became the British Ambassador for UNICEF.

It is interesting that Murray, who is of British descent, won this prestigious humanitarian award in the same year that England’s Lawn Tennis Association was fined $750,000 for banning Russians and Belarusians from competing at Wimbledon in 2022.  Murray made the decision to make the significant donation prior to competing at Indian Wells in March, and all of his prize money thereafter went to Ukrainian aid.

Murray has won $63,248,245 all-time. That is the fourth most money among all ATP players, only behind Novak Djokovic of Serbia ($165 million), Rafael Nadal of Spain ($134 million), and Roger Federer of Switzerland ($131 million). Murray’s best result since making the donation was reaching the finals in Stuttgart this past June. In Germany, Murray lost to Italy’s Matteo Berrettini 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Murray is a three-time grand slam champion as he won the 2012 United States Open, 2013 Wimbledon and 2016 Wimbledon.
