One of the intriguing storylines from Wimbledon in 2023 was the fact that two tennis stars were once again unable to reach the grand slam semifinal at a major. Yesterday we focused on world number four Jessica Pegula of the United States, who is now 0-6 in grand slam quarterfinals on the women’s side. Today, it is time to focus on Russian Andrey Rublev, who is now 0-8 in grand slam quarterfinals on the men’s side.

Rublev’s eighth straight quarterfinal grand slam loss came on Tuesday in a four set loss to defending Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia. It got off to a good start for Rublev, who won the first set, 6-4. But then Djokovic steamrolled past Rublev, as he won the next three sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3.

Two statistics stood out in the match over all the rest. Djokovic had 121 total points compared to 96 for Rublev, while Djokovic won 21 points at the net, while Rublev only won eight.

Rublev is currently seventh in the world. His first grand slam quarterfinal loss came at the 2017 United States Open. There he got clobbered by eventual champion Rafael Nadal of Spain, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. That was followed by a 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece at the 2020 French Open, a 7-6, 6-3, 7-6 loss to fellow Russian Daniil Medvedev at the 2020 United States Open, a 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 loss to Medvedev at the 2021 Australian Open, a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 loss to Marin Cilic of Croatia in the quarterfinals of the 2022 French Open, a 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 loss to Frances Tiafoe of the United States at the 2022 United States Open, and a 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 loss at the 2023 Australian Open to Djokovic, the eventual champion.
