German tennis star Andrea Petkovic is planning to retire according to tennisuptodate.com. Petkovic’s most notable tennis accomplishment was making the semifinals of the 2014 French Open.

Petkovic has not determined yet if she will retire after the 2022 United States Open or go on to play another WTA tournament in Europe to finish her professional tennis career. There are WTA events in Italy, Estonia, the Czech Republic and Romania following the final grand slam tournament on the 2022 tennis calendar.

Petkovic’s match at the 2022 United States Open against Belinda Bencic of Switzerland is considered one of the top five first round matches to begin the tournament. Bencic, the reigning Olympic gold medalist who reached the semifinal of the 2019 United States Open, beat Serena Williams of the United States 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of the 2022 National Bank Open in Toronto earlier this month. Bencic’s win over Williams came immediately after Williams announced her retirement from professional tennis after the 2022 United States Open.

Petkovic has won seven WTA titles in her career. She defeated Ioana Raluca Olaru of Romania 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the 2009 Austrian Open, Marion Bartoli of France 6-4, 1-0 in the final of Strasbourg in 2011,  Jana Cepelova of Slovakia 7-5, 6-2 in the final of Charleston in April of 2014, Shelby Rogers of the United States 6-3, 6-3 in the final of the 2014 Austrian Open, Flavia Pennetta of Italy 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the 2014 WTA Tournament of Champions in Bulgaria, Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain in a walkover in the final of the Antwerp Diamond Games in February of 2015, and Mayar Sherif of Egypt 6-1, 6-1 in the final of the 2021 Winners Open in Romania.
