According to the Associated Press on Monday, American golfers will now be paid to participate in the Ryder Cup. American golfers will now receive $200,000 each with an additional $300,000 going to the charity of their choice.

Since 1999 American participants at the Ryder Cup have received $200,000 each with the money going strictly to charity. The decision by the PGA of America Board now makes the event a professional tournament rather than an amateur one. Over the last quarter of a century, Europe has won eight of the last 12 Ryder Cups. The last American win came in Kohler, Wisconsin in 2021.

One critic of the PGA of America’s decision is European Ryder Cup veteran Colin Montgomerie. He believes “you can’t have a competition where one team’s being paid and the other isn’t.”

The 2025 Ryder Cup will take place at Bethpage Black Course in Long Island, New York from September 25 to 28. The course has hosted the 2002 and 2009 United States Open in the past, as well as the 2019 PGA Championship.

The American captain for the 2025 Ryder Cup will be Keegan Bradley of Woodstock, Vermont.  Bradley is best known for winning the 2011 PGA Championship. The European captain for the 2025 Ryder Cup is Luke Donald of Hemel Hempstead, England. This is the second straight Ryder Cup that Donald is captaining Europe. He captained Europe to a victory in 2023.

Donald has the distinction of being the last golfer ranked first in the world without ever winning a major title. He accomplished the feat in 2012. Actually, only one other golfer ever has been ranked number one without winning a major. That was Lee Westwood of Worksop, England, who was first in the world in 2011.
