Alex Gordon to retire from MLB at the end of the 2020 season

Alex Gordon of Lincoln, Nebraska has announced that this will be his final season of Major League Baseball according to the Associated Press on Thursday. Gordon, who is 36 years old, has played the last 14 seasons as an outfielder for the Kansas City Royals and has been a three-time All-Star (2013, 2014, 2015).

In 2020, Gordon batted .206 with four home runs and 11 runs batted in during 155 at bats. In 47 games, Gordon has scored 15 runs with 32 hits, four doubles, 17 walks, 48 total bases, a .297 on base percentage and a .310 slugging percentage.

Gordon led Major League Baseball with 51 doubles during the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season. That year he also set career highs in hits (189), and walks (73).

A member of the Royals team that won the 2015 World Series, Gordon batted .240 during the 2015 postseason with two home runs and six runs batted in. The Royals defeated the Houston Astros in the American League Divisional Series, the Toronto Blue Jays during the American League Championship Series, and the New York Mets during the World Series.

Gordon was also known for his exceptional defense in left field. Seven times he won the Gold Glove Award in the American League (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019). He had a career fielding percentage of .994 in the outfield and only committed 18 errors in the outfield in 1379 games.

It was a disappointing 2020 season for Kansas City. They currently are in fourth place in the American League Central with a record of 24 wins and 33 losses. The Royals will also not be one of the eight teams from the junior circuit that will reach the postseason.
