Alex De Minaur reaches third round of 2023 United States Open

Alex De Minaur of Sydney, Australia is in the third round of the 2023 United States Open. On Thursday in the second round, he steamrolled past Yibing Wu of China, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1.
De Minaur completely dominated Wu in only 87 minutes. He won 88 points compared to 52 for Wu. De Minaur also broke Wu seven times. When in came to the serve, de Minaur had two double faults compared to seven for Wu. De Minaur also had 10 double faults compared to 36 for Wu.
De Minaur is one of two Australian men in round three. The other is wildcard Rinky Hijikata of Sydney. In the third round, Hijikata will play another Chinese player in Zhizhen Zhang. In the second round, Zhang upset Norway’s Casper Ruud, the fifth seed, in five sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2. Ruud is one of two top-five seeds to be eliminated from the United States Open so far. The other is the fourth seed, Holger Rune of Denmark. Rune was beaten in the first round by Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, on Monday.
This will be the first time that Hijikata will have played Zhang in an ATP event. De Minaur meanwhile will be facing the 23rd seed, Nicolas Jarry of Chile. De Minaur has beaten Jarry once before. It was in the first round of Acapulco in 2019, where De Minaur won 7-6, 7-6. De Minaur won 7-5 in the first set tiebreak and 7-2 in the second set tiebreak.
De Minaur’s best grand slam result came at the United States Open. In 2020, he reached the quarterfinals before losing to eventual champion Dominic Thiem of Austria.
