Alex de Minaur of Sydney, Australia is in the quarterfinals of the 2024 French Open. He is the first Australian man to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian since Lleyton Hewitt of Adelaide accomplished the feat in 2004.

In his last two wins, de Minaur, who is seeded 11th, beat Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in the third round, and then upset the fifth seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 in the fourth round. In de Minaur’s win over Struff, de Minaur broke Struff seven times in 10 opportunities, and won 10 more total points (128 for de Minaur and 118 for Struff). In de Minaur’s win over Medvedev, de Minaur broke Medvedev seven times, while Medvedev only broke de Minaur twice. On the return of serve, de Minaur won 52 points, while Medvedev won 33.

This was the third time in nine opportunities that de Minaur has beaten Medvedev. He also won 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 in the second round of the Paris Indoor in 2022 and 7-6, 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the 2023 National Bank Open in Toronto.

Next up for de Minaur is the Olympic champion, fourth seed, and 2020 United States Open finalist Alexander Zverev of Germany. All-time, Zverev has won seven of nine matches. Both of de Minaur’s wins have come in Australia. He won 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 in the round robin of the 2020 ATP Cup in Brisbane and then won 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals of the 2024 United Cup in Sydney.

The other three quarterfinals in men’s action have Jannik Sinner of Italy versus Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, Carlos Alcaraz of Spain versus Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, and Novak Djokovic of Serbia versus Casper Ruud of Norway. The other four quarterfinals in women’s action have Iga Swiatek of Poland versus Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic, Coco Gauff of the United States versus Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan versus Jasmine Paolini of Italy and Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus versus Mirra Andreeva of Russia.
