Alex de Minaur reaches quarterfinals of 2025 US Open

Alex de Minaur of Sydney, Australia has reached the sixth grand slam quarterfinal match of his tennis career. On Monday, de Minaur beat Leandro Riedi of Switzerland in a dominant fourth round victory at the 2025 United States Open by a score of 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.

de Minaur, the eighth seed at Flushing Meadows, had the statistical advantage when it came to the serve. He had nine aces and three double faults, and Riedi had three aces and nine double faults. de Minaur also broke Riedi eight times in 15 opportunities. Riedi was an unexpected fourth round participant as he was ranked 435th in the world.

What de Minaur will be trying to achieve next is something he has never done in his tennis career. That is to win a grand slam singles quarterfinal matchup. He has previously lost 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 to Austria’s Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals of the 2020 United States Open, 6-4, 7-6, 6-4 to Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals of the 2024 French Open, withdrew against Novak Djokovic of Serbia at the 2024 Wimbledon quarterfinals due to a hip injury, beaten 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 by Great Britain’s Jack Draper at the 2025 United States Open, and beaten easily 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 by Italy’s Jannik Sinner at the 2025 Australian Open.

Next up for de Minaur is the 25th seed, Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, on Wednesday. All-time, Auger-Aliassime has won two of the three matches. Auger-Aliassime won 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of Cincinnati in 2022, and 6-3, 6-4 in the 2022 Davis Cup Final in Malaga, Spain. The only win for de Minaur came in the third round of Rome in 2024. In this three set contest, de Minaur came through with a challenging 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 win.
