Alex de Minaur leads Team World to win at the 2025 Laver Cup

For the third time in the history of the tournament, Team World has won the Laver Cup. After being victorious in 2022 in London and in 2023 in Vancouver, Team World won the 2025 title in San Francisco this past weekend.

The World team came through with a 15-9 victory over Team Euope in the three day event. It was actually the most points Team World recorded at a single Laver Cup. They had 13 points when they won in 2022 and 2023.

In an interesting format, one point is awarded for a first day Friday win, two points are awarded for a second day Saturday win, and three points are awarded for a third day Sunday win. This is another reason why I do not like the Laver Cup. In my opinion, every match throughout the entire weekend should be of equal value.

The star for Team World over the weekend was Australia’s Alex de Minaur of Sydney. The world number eight won all three of his matches. He beat Alexander Zverev of Germany 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday, teamed up with Alex Michelson of the United States in men’s doubles action and beat Casper Rune of Norway and Holger Rune of Denmark, 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday, and then beat Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday. In all de Minaur generated a team high seven points.

Team World received four more victories. American Taylor Fritz upset Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday, and Zverev 6-3, 7-6 on Sunday. Meanwhile, Brazil’s Joao Fonseca beat Italy’s Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 6-3 on Friday, and Francisco Cerundolo of Agentina beat Rune 6-3, 7-6 on Saturday.
