Alec Mills of Clarksville, Tennessee recorded the second no-hitter of 2020 as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 12-0 from Miller Park in Milwaukee on Sunday. Mills delivered the no-hitter in 114 pitches, where he had 74 strikes, five strikeouts, and three walks. The first pitcher to have a no-hitter this season also had a connection to Chicago, as Lucas Giolito of the Chicago White Sox delivered a no-hitter in a 4-0 Chicago win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 25.
The fact that Giolito recorded a no-hitter was not a gigantic surprise. That is because he is the ace of the White Sox pitching staff and was an All-Star in 2019. In his prior outing to his no-hitter, Giolito threw seven shutout innings in a 9-0 White Sox win over the Detroit Tigers.
At first glance, you might be stunned that Mills also had a no-hitter this season. His earned run average prior to Sunday’s masterpiece was 4.74. However, like Giolito, Mills was outstanding in his previous start before his no-hitter. On September 8, Mills threw six shutout innings in a 3-0 Cubs win over the Cincinnati Reds.
With the no-hitter, Mills has now seen his earned run average drop from 4.74 to a respectable 3.93. In nine games, Mills has a record of five wins and three losses, in 52 2/3 innings pitched. Over that time he has given up 39 hits, 23 earned runs, 17 walks and eight home runs. Mills also has 37 strikeouts and an excellent WHIP of 1.06.

Mills has definitely become a major part of the Cubs starting rotation that includes Yu Darvish, Kyle Hendricks and Jon Lester. Chicago currently leads the St. Louis Cardinals by four games in the National League Central with a record of 28 wins and 20 losses.
