AFL is back with four matches before Round 1 which is next week so it’s fair to say it’s a strange start to the 2024 season.

The rationale of having this early round was that the AFL wanted to take advantage of the NRL starting their season in Las Vegas but that was last week and have four matches held in the northern States.

The remaining NRL clubs are playing over this weekend so there isn’t any real jump on the NRL at all.

BRISBANE $1.27 v CARLTON $3.75 – 7.40pm Friday Gabba

The Gabba is the Brisbane Lions fortress having won 13 from 13 matches last start and they have now won 14 in a row. They take on the Blues who will be without key players Sam Walsh and Jacob Weitering.

GOLD COAST SUNS $1.53 v RICHMOND $2.50 – 4.20pm Saturday Gold Coast

It’s the clash of the new coaches when Richmond’s former coach Damian Hardwick takes over at the Gold Coast against Adam Yze who will be coaching his first game at the Tigers. Hardwick will have an inherent knowledge of the Tigers but they will also know his game plan. The Suns were disappointing in the two lead-in matches while Richmond defeated Melbourne and then were outclassed by the reigning Premiers Collingwood.

TIP: RICHMOND

Bet: Richmond at $2.50 looks over the odds.

GWS $1.65 v COLLINGWOOD $2.21 – 7.30pm Saturday Giants Stadium

Only a point separated them in the Preliminary Final so it again should be a close game which often goes the way of the reigning premiers. Expect another tight clash.
