49ers sign quarterback Josh Rosen from the Buccaneers

According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports on Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers have signed quarterback Josh Rosen of Torrance, California off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad. The Buccaneers are obviously fine at quarterback as they have Tom Brady as their starter, and Blaine Gabbert backing Brady up.
The same cannot be said for the 49ers at the moment. Heading into Saturday’s contest against the Arizona Cardinals, they have a significant number of issues at the quarterback position. They include Jimmy Garoppolo being out with a high ankle sprain, Nick Mullens out with a serious elbow injury, and Josh Johnson on the reserve/COVID list. This means that third-string quarterback C.J. Beathard will be the starter for the 49ers, and Rosen will be the backup.
Rosen, a product of UCLA, may not have seen any playing time in 2020, but does have NFL experience over the last two years with the Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins. Rosen has completed 275 of 502 pass attempts for 2845 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions. He also has had 26 rushes for 151 yards. Unfortunately, the statistics show that San Francisco is not picking up a great quarterback. In addition to having seven more career interceptions than touchdowns, Rosen only has a career record of three wins, and 13 losses.
However, there is no doubt that the 49ers were desperate to find an experienced backup to Beathard, and Rosen was the best they could find. 49ers fans will also need to take a deep breath to come to terms with the fact that Beathard could actually be worse than Rosen. At first glance, it may not look bad, as Beathard has completed 253 of 438 passes, with 14 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, 45 rushes, 205 yards, and four touchdowns. However, it is Beathard’s win/loss record that is poor. Here, he has a record of only one win, and nine losses.

This has been a tough season for the 49ers. They have to play their home games recently in Arizona due to coronavirus restrictions in their home county, and are last in the NFC West at five wins and nine losses. To make matters worse, San Francisco will not have running back Raheem Mostert for their last two games either, as he has a high anle sprain, like Garoppolo.
