It was redemption for Anamoe as he stamped himself as the superstar of Australian racing with a dominant win in the 2022 Cox Plate. Find out what the jockeys said below.

James McDonald (Anamoe – Winner)

“I’m not going to lie, it’s been a big build up. The Cox Plate. It’s unbelievable and I can’t believe it. Especially on this horse.

“It’s been a massive build up and I felt the tension. I could cut it with a butter knife but it is unbelievable and good to get it over and done with.

“I don’t know how Hughey Bowman did it with four of them. What a race. I’m so proud of this horse. Full credit to him. He’s unbelievable.

Mark Zahra (I’m Thunderstruck – Second)

“He ran super, it was just the winner’s had a plum run from the barrier and we’ve had to get back and weave through. He was very gallant in defeat.”

Damien Oliver (El Bodegon – 3rd)

“Great run. I was really proud of him. They went a bit steady in the early and mid stages, but I thought he fought it out really well.”

Jamie Kah (Zaaki – 4th)

“He was good. The way the rail is today you need to get out wider, but with his laying-in he was in the worst part of the track.”

Tim Clark (Aligator Blood – 5th)

“Really brave effort. I thought he went as well today as he has gone all prep.”

Nash Rawiller (Mo’unga – 6th)

“He was awesome. Really good.”

Craig Williams (Mr Brightside – 7th)

The barrier end up being a really big disadvantage the way the race was run as they didn’t go too fast, but I loved the way that throughout the race he showed how good he is. But, to be giving them that much of a head start, to be having that type of sprint against that calibre of horse at 10 furlongs, we were just a bit vulnerable.”

John Allen (Laws Of Indices – 8th)

“He’s run super. We had a lovely run, his stamina probably just told on him in the end.”

Jamie Spencer (Gold Trip – 9th)

“I was in the stalls a long time and he got a bit upset, he missed it a beat when they opened and got tightened a little bit for room before the turn in. He probably would have been a place or two closer other than that.”

Damian Lane (Young Werther – 10th)

“He was honest. He just couldn’t sprint with them off that tempo.”

Ben Melham (Maximal – 11th)

“He ran good. I thought he was a real sniff up the side, he travelled into it but he’s just a duffer when you let his head go in that ground.”

Chad Schofield (Profondo – 12th)

“Obviously disappointing. He over-travelled and didn’t let go and finished tailed off.”
