The 2023 Ryder Cup started on Friday from Rome, Italy. When Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg teamed up with Norway’s Viktor Hovland in men’s foursome action against the American duo of Max Homa and 2023 British Open champion Brian Harman, he made Ryder Cup history. Aberg became the first golfer ever to compete at the Ryder Cup before competing in hist first major championship according to Martyn Herman of Reuters Media.

Aberg is 23 years old and was a rookie on the PGA Tour in 2023. He was even victorious on the European Tour as he won the 2023 Omega European Masters in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. Aberg posted a four round score of -19 and beat fellow Swede Alexander Bjork by two strokes. Aberg also became the sixth Swedish golfer to win the European Masters following Anders Forsbrand (1987), Mathias Gronberg (1995), Robert Karlsson (2002), Alex Noren (2009 and 2016), and Sebastien Soderberg (2019).

Aberg’s meteoric rise in the Official World Golf Rankings is quite frankly astounding. He has moved from 3064th in the world at the end of the 2022 calendar year to 80th. Aberg is the only golfer that was ranked outside the top 700 at the end of 2022, who is now in the top 100.

It should be noted that Aberg is the only Swede on the Ryder Cup team even though there are three Swedes ranked ahead of him in the Official World Golf Rankings. Noren is 68th, Vincent Norrman is 73rd and Bjork is 75th. Henrik Stenson was the original Ryder Cup captain for Team Europe, but lost his captaincy to England’s Luke Donald when he joined the LIV Tour.
