It was a magical day for two golfers at the 2023 United States Open. Both Rickie Fowler of Murrieta, California and American Olympic gold medalist Xander Schauffele of San Diego, California are both at eight-under-par after scores of 62 at the Los Angeles Country Club. It was the first time ever that there were two rounds of 62 on the same day as the United States Open. Schauffele snd Fowler also posted the lowest score ever in the history of a major championship. The only other golfer to shoot a 62 was Branden Grace of Pretoria, South Africa in the third round of the 2017 British Open.

Fowler had 10 birdies and two bogeys. He birdied the first, second, third, sixth, eighth, 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th and 18th holes. Fowler bogeyed the 11th and 17th holes.

Schauffele had eight birdies and zero bogeys. He birdied the first, second. fifth, seventh, eighth, 10th, 12th, and 14th holes.

Four more golfers are in contention after day one. At -6 are Americans Wyndham Clark of Denver, Colorado and two-time major champion Dustin Johnson of Columbia, South Carolina. Johnson won the 2016 United States Open and the 2020 Masters.

At -5 and three strokes back of the leaders are four-time major champion Rory McIlroy of Holywood, Northern Ireland, (who shined in Hollywood on Thursday), and Brian Harman of Savannah, Georgia. McIlroy won the 2011 United States Open, the 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship and the 2014 British Open.

It was also a magical day for American Sam Burns and France’s Matthieu Pavon.  On the par three 15th hole, Burns and Pavon each hit a hole in one.
