According to Ameer Tyree of CBS Sports on Tuesday, the Detroit Pistons have set the record for the most consecutive losses in the National Basketball Association in a single season. They have now lost 27 straight games after losing 118-112 to the Brooklyn Nets.

The Pistons broke the record previously set by the Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers. The Cavaliers lost 26 straight games during the 2010-11 season and the 76ers lost 26 straight games during the 2013-14 season.

Only one other team has lost more consecutive games than the Pistons. The 76ers lost 28 straight games over two seasons. Philadelphia lost their last 10 games of their 2014-15 season, and then the first 18 games of their 2015-16 season.

The Pistons set a franchise record with their 15th straight loss on November 29 when they lost 133-107 to the Los Angeles Lakers. Detroit actually won two of their first three games this season. After losing 103-102 to the Miami Heat in their regular season opener, they beat the Charlotte Hornets 111-99 on October 27, and then the Chicago Bulls 118-102 on October 28.

The Pistons’s losing streak started on October 30 when they lost 124-112 to the Oklahoma City Thunder. They have since lost all 15 games they played in the month of November, and all 11 games they played in the month of December.

The losing streak is occurring despite the fact that Cade Cunningham of Arlington, Texas is averaging a respectable 23 points per game. It should also be noted that their head coach, Monty Williams of Fredericksburg, Virginia, is the highest paid coach in the NBA. In the off-season, he signed a six year contract worth $78.5 million. Detroit, which is 2-28 on the season, next plays in Boston on Thursday.
