Opinion: Super Bowl MVP should have been on defense in Super Bowl LX

The Seattle Seahawks are winners of Super Bowl LX from San Francisco on Sunday. The Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots 29-13 for their second Super Bowl title in franchise history.

The Super Bowl MVP was Kenneth Walker III. The running back from Arlington, Tennessee had a strong game. He had 161 total yards (135 yards rushing and 26 yards receiving from two catches). However, this was such a dominant game by the Seahawks defense, the voters should have given the MVP to either linebacker Ernest Jones IV of Waycross, Georgia; Byron Murphy II of DeSoto, Texas; linebacker Derick Hall of Gulfport, Mississippi; safety Julian Love of Westchester, Illinois; or linebacker Uchenna Nwosu of Carson, California.

Jones led the Seahawks with 10 tackles, Hall had a fumble recovery, Murphy II had a forced fumble, while Love and Nwosu had interceptions. Nwosu’s interception was a pick six that went for 45 yards and put the game out of reach.

Anyway you look at it, the Seahawks won because of their smothering defense. To put the game into perspective, the Patriots head zero points in the first three quarters, as Patriots quarterback Drake Maye was getting his butt kicked in every sense of the phrase. Remember, Maye was considered for NFL MVP this year, but it was the Seahawks defense that put in a world class collective effort and confused Maye throughout. The Patriots actually had more punts (five) than first downs (four) in the first half.

It was also a strong Super Bowl for Seahawks kicker Jason Myers of Chula Vista, California. He set the record for most field goals in a Super Bowl game with five.
