Not all the headlines from the first week of the 2024 National Football League came from on the field. There were two major storylines off of it. The legal troubles for quarterback Deshaun Watson are continuing, while a new incident arose for Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill of Pearson, Georgia.

Hill was actually very fortunate to play on Sunday. That is because he was pulled over by several police officer for a traffic violation prior to the Dolphins’s regular season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to Mike Wendling of the BBC, Hill allegedly did not have a seatbelt on, and according to beinsports, was driving 20 miles over the speed limit . The officers reportedly knocked hard on the window of Hill’s vehicle, before placing him in handcuffs, and faced down on the pavement. While the Miami Police Union reported that the officers acted properly, the Dolphins put out a statement saying that “we are saddened by the overly aggressive and violent conduct” of the officers and one officer has been placed on administrative duty pending an investigation. Hill was released in time for the game, and had seven catches and 130 receiving yards and a touchdown in a 20-17 Miami win.

Watson’s legal trouble is stemming from the incident while with the Houston Texans. This latest incident has Watson being sued for a sexual assault prior to a date in Houston in 2020. Watson faced 20 sexual assault misconduct accusations during his time with the Texans. The misconducts led to Watson not playing the 2020 NFL season, and an 11-game suspension in 2021. When Watson returned to the NFL two years ago, he was with the Browns.
