Matt Jones of Sydney, Australia became the first Australian to win an event on the PGA Tour this season. This past weekend at the Honda Classic in Miami, Florida, Jones was by far the most dominant golfer in the field as he posted a score of 12-under-par to beat Brandon Hagy of Santa Monica, California by five strokes.

A major reason for Jones’s five-stroke win was because of his great start. He had a first-round score of nine-under-par 61, which tied the course record at the Champion Course. Jones followed his fantastic opening 18 holes, with scores of even-par 70 in round two, one-under-par 69 in round three, and two-under-par 68 in round four.

So just how dominant was Jones’s win this weekend? His five-stroke win was tied for the largest win on the PGA Tour in 2021. The other player to win by five strokes was 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed of San Antonio, Texas, who posted a score of -14 to beat Americans Tony Finau, Ryan Palmer and Xander Schauffele, along with Norway’s Viktor Hovland and Sweden’s Henrik Norlander at the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego in January.

This was Jones’s second career win on the PGA Tour. His first was a playoff win over Matt Kuchar at the 2014 Shell Houston Open.

In 2020, three Australians won on the PGA Tour. All the Australian wins came before the coronavirus lockdown. Cameron Smith won the Sony Open in Honolulu, Marc Leishman won the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, and Adam Scott won the Genesis Invitational at Pacific Palisades.
