J.T. Poston of Hickory, North Carolina has won the 2024 Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas, Nevada. Poston posted a score of -22 and beat fellow American Doug Ghim of Des Plaines, Illinois by a stroke.
Poston had a first round score of seven-under-par 64, a second round score of six-under-par 65, third round score of five-under-par 66, and a fourth round score of four-under-par 67. It is interesting that Poston had his best round on Thursday, and then shot a score of one shot worse from the previous day in his next three rounds.
In a remarkable statistic, Poston had three eagles during the tournament. He had amazing success on the par five 16th, as he eagled the par five in each of the first two rounds. Poston also eagled the par five ninth hole in round three. It is the second straight week that the PGA Tour champion won the title with three eagles. Last week, Matt McCarty of Scottsdale, Arizona accomplished the feat in winning the Black Desert Classic in Utah.
Ghim had a lot of local support. Even though the 28-year-old who had an outstanding amateur career, was born in the Chicago area, he currently lives in Las Vegas.
There were two more golfers in contention. Rico Hoey of the Philippines and Matti Schmid of Germany were tied at -19, and three strokes back of Poston.
This was Poston’s third career PGA title. He previously won the 2019 Wyndham Championship by a stroke over the 2012 United States Open champion Webb Simpson, and then the 2022 John Deere Classic.
