The 2023 Cincinnati Masters singles finals took place on Sunday, with Coco Gauff of Delray Beach, Florida winning the women’s event and Novak Djokovic of Belgrade, Serbia winning the men’s event. In the women’s final, Gauff defeated Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4.
At the age of 19 years, Gauff became the youngest Cincinnati Masters women’s singles champion since Linda Tuero of Metairie, Louisiana won the title in 1968 according to the Associated Press. At the time, the Cincinnati Masters was known as the Tri-State Tournament, and Tuero beat Tory Ann Fretz of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in an All-American final, 6-1, 6-2.
For Gauff on Sunday, it was her fifth WTA title. She previously won the 2019 Linz Open in Austria, the 2021 Emilia-Romagna Open in Italy, the 2023 Auckland Classic and the 2023 Washington Open.
The Cincinnati final was a battle of French Open finalists. Gauff lost to Iga Swiatek of Poland in the 2022 French Open final, and Muchova lost to Swiatek in the 2023 French Open final. Gauff actually beat Swiatek in the Cincinnati Masters semifinal on Saturday, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.
The men’s final on Sunday was an absolute classic with Djokovic, the world number two, defeating the world number one, Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, 5-7, 7-6, 7-6. The men’s final lasted three hours and 49 minutes. In a rematch of the Wimbledon final won by Alcaraz, the quality of tennis in this match was possibly the best tennis we have all seen in 2023. It was also the first time that the top two players in the world faced each other on hard court.
For Djokovic it was his 95th title on the ATP Tour. It was his third win in Cincinnati as he previously won in 2018 and 2020.
