The women’s quarterfinals are taking place at Indian Wells on Thursday, and one of the biggest stories over the last week since the tournament started has been the play of Australian qualifier Talia Gibson. The 21-year-old native of Perth is in the final eight even though she is not even ranked in the top 100 in the world rankings. Heading into the WTA 1000 series event, Gibson was ranked 112th in the world. Now she will be at least in the top 70 when the world rankings are revised next week.
Gibson has beaten three top 20 players at Indian Wells so far. She beat the 11th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia, 6-3, 7-5 in the second round, the 17th seed Clara Tauson of Denmark 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 in the third round, and Jasmine Paolini of Italy, the seventh seed and two-time grand slam finalist, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1, in the fourth round. Paolini made the final of the French Open and Wimbledon in 2024.
In a remarkable statistic, Gibson actually beat Tauson when she had 20 fewer errors. Gibson had eight aces, while Tauson had 28 aces.
Gibson also had not even won a match at the WTA 1000 series level since beating Ann Li of the United States 6-3, 7-5 in the first round of Indian Wells last Wednesday. Gibson has only won two grand slam matches to date. She beat Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 as a wildcard in the first round in the 2025 Australian Open, and then beat Russian Anna Blinkova 6-1, 6-3 as a wildcard in the first round of the 2026 Australian Open.
In the quarterfinals on Thursday, Gibson’s opponent will be Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic, the 14th seed. This will be their first ever meeting.
